What Is Nonwoven Film Lamination?

Film lamination is the process of bonding a polymer film to a nonwoven fabric to create a composite material. The film provides barrier and waterproofing; the nonwoven provides softness, absorbency, or structural strength. The result is used wherever a soft, fabric-like material must also block liquid or provide a barrier.

Common film types are polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), typically 12-50 microns thick, available transparent or colored. The nonwoven substrate can be spunlace, spunbond, or needle-punched, depending on the required surface properties.

Medical Laminates: Barrier Standards

Medical laminates must meet liquid barrier standards. The two most important are AAMI PB70 (US) and EN 13795 (EU), which classify protective apparel by barrier performance level. The laminate must pass liquid penetration and microbial barrier tests for the intended protection level.

The film layer provides the barrier; the nonwoven layer provides comfort, softness, and absorbency against the skin. Peel strength between the film and substrate is tested to standards such as ASTM D903 to ensure the laminate does not delaminate in use.

Specifying a Laminate: The Parameters That Matter

Film lamination adds a second layer of tolerance: the substrate GSM tolerance plus the film thickness tolerance plus the adhesive coat weight. Confirm the total laminate grammage tolerance with your laminator before production, and request a laminate sample (贴合样) for approval before committing to volume.
