Flushable Wipes Fabric

Wet-laid spunlace on our 2026 Trützschler line — designed for flushability and biodegradability

Flushable wipes are one of the most technically demanding spunlace applications. The fabric must be strong enough to perform as a wipe during use, but break apart quickly when flushed so it passes through sewer systems without clogging. This is governed by the INDA/EDANA GD4 flushability assessment, which tests for dispersibility, biodegradation, and sewer/plumbing compatibility. Conventional dry-laid spunlace struggles to meet GD4 because the long fibers create entanglement that resists breakdown in water. Wet-laid spunlace, which uses shorter fibers deposited in a water-based process (similar to papermaking), disperses much more readily. SunLuner's L5 line — a Trützschler wet-laid spunlace system installed in 2026 — is specifically designed for flushable wipe fabric production. Using 100% cellulosic fibers (wood pulp + viscose) at 40-100 gsm, L5 produces fabric that can be engineered to meet GD4 flushability requirements while maintaining adequate wet strength for consumer use.

Which Series Is Right for This Application?

Honest comparison — including which series we do NOT recommend and why.

Eco-Pure (on L5)
100% Biodegradable Spunlace
Recommended

When produced on L5 (wet-laid), Eco-Pure uses shorter cellulosic fibers that disperse in water — the key requirement for flushable wipes. 100% biodegradable. FSC-certified fibers. This is the only configuration we recommend for flushable applications.

Eco-Pure (on L1/L2)
100% Biodegradable Spunlace
Not Recommended

Semi-cross laced Eco-Pure on L1/L2 uses longer viscose fibers that will not break apart adequately in water. Do NOT use for flushable wipe claims — the fabric will not pass GD4 dispersibility testing.

Pro-Clean
High-Strength Cleaning Spunlace
Not Recommended

Contains polyester, which does not biodegrade and will not disperse in water. Never use for flushable wipes. Polyester fibers contribute to sewer blockages and environmental microplastic pollution.

Color-Tech
HACCP Color-Coded Spunlace
Not Recommended

Dyed viscose introduces colorants that may not meet flushability biodegradation requirements. Not recommended for flushable applications.

Certifications & Compliance

What we can certify — and what we cannot. Be specific in your procurement requirements.

ISO 9001

Quality Management System certified. Full batch traceability with test reports for wet strength, dispersibility, and biodegradation indicators.

FSC-C219110

FSC-certified cellulosic fibers. Required for flushable wipe brands marketed with sustainable forestry claims, especially in EU markets.

INDA/EDANA GD4 Support

Our L5 wet-laid fabric is designed to be engineered toward GD4 flushability requirements. We provide wet strength, dispersibility (slosh box), and biodegradation test data. Note: GD4 certification is obtained on the finished wipe product, not the fabric alone — we supply the fabric and technical data to support your finished product testing.

Biodegradability

100% cellulosic fibers (wood pulp + viscose) are inherently biodegradable in both aerobic and anaerobic sewer/septic environments. We can provide biodegradation test data from third-party labs.

Selection Checklist

Questions to help you decide — with our honest guidance based on production capabilities.

1Will the fabric pass GD4 flushability testing?

Our L5 wet-laid fabric is engineered for dispersibility, but GD4 compliance depends on the finished product — including your converting process, binder (if any), and lotion formulation. We recommend: order samples, convert them into finished wipes with your lotion, then submit to a GD4-certified lab (e.g., NSF, TÜV) for the full 7-test assessment. We provide fabric-level dispersibility data to support this process.

2What GSM for flushable wipes?

50-60 gsm is the sweet spot. Below 40 gsm, the wipe feels too thin for consumer acceptance. Above 80 gsm, dispersibility becomes harder to achieve. For the best balance of user experience and flushability, specify 55 gsm.

3Wood pulp or viscose dominant blend?

Higher wood pulp content improves dispersibility (shorter fibers break apart faster) but reduces wet strength. Higher viscose content improves strength and softness but slows dispersal. We typically recommend 70-80% wood pulp / 20-30% viscose for flushable applications. Discuss your specific requirements with our technical team.

4Do you use any binders or chemical additives?

No. Our wet-laid spunlace uses hydroentanglement (water jets) to bond fibers — no chemical binders, no thermal adhesives. This is important for flushability claims, as chemical binders can prevent dispersal and introduce non-biodegradable components.

5What about the lotion/formulation compatibility?

The finished wipe's flushability depends on both fabric and formulation. Avoid lotion ingredients that act as binders when dried (e.g., high levels of polymers, thickeners that form films). We can share our technical guidelines on formulation compatibility for flushable products.
